Go-ahead for Cockpit work

Thursday 25th September 2008, 10:59AM BST.

Plans to restore an historic Mid Wales building once used for cockfighting have taken a step forward.

The Cockpit, off Broad Street in Welshpool, has stood empty for several years. Now Welshpool Town Council is to renovate it and let it to the Montgomeryshire Federation of Women’s Institutes as its county office.

At a meeting of Welshpool Town Council yesterday, Robert Robinson, council clerk, said funding for refurbishment work to the building had now been secured.

Mr Robinson said: “£12,000 has been made available to carry out refurbishment work to the building which will allow the WI to take it over.”

He said work would include floor covering, re-decoration, electric work and installing toilets under the stairs. Councillors agreed to allocate the funding for the work.

Councillor Alan Crowe said: “I’m glad it’s finally going to be back in use as it has been empty for so long.”

He said he hoped the town council would put up some information boards explaining more about its history.
