Beaten Sarah is wowed by Laura

Thursday 25th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Laura RobsonGolden girl Laura Robson has the ability to take the tennis world by storm – that was the opinion of British No 8 Sarah Borwell after she was beaten in three sets by the 14-year-old at Shrewsbury’s Welti Tennis Centre.Robson, competing in her first senior event in the UK, showed signs of natural brilliance to squeeze past the experienced Borwell 7-6 2-6 6-3 and progress to the second round of the Shrewsbury 75,000 dollar event.

Twenty-nine-year-old Borwell was full of praise for the Wimbledon girls junior champion.

“I know we like to get carried away with people coming through in various sports, but I think she is amazing,” she said.

“It’s a long road from 14 to 18/20 and things can change, but right now I haven’t seen a 14-year-old who carries herself on court so well.

“I thought she might fall off a bit in the third set but she continued to run balls down and be as aggressive as she was in the beginning.

“She reminded me of Ana Ivanovic the way she was seeing the ball so early and the angles that she made.

“After watching her at Wimbledon I thought she might struggle with more powerful players, but her movement and awareness of where the ball is going is certainly as good as the girls who are at the top.”

Robson is in action again today against Poland’s Urszula Radwanska.
