Talks on fate of homes bid

Tuesday 23rd September 2008, 6:59PM BST.

The fate of controversial plans to redevelop redundant industrial buildings in Cleobury Mortimer to create more than 100 homes will be decided this week.

If South Shropshire District Council votes against the plans at a full council meeting on Thursday the application will be scrapped.

If members vote in favour it will go on to the Secretary of State for a final decision.

The move follows a decision by the council’s scrutiny panel to reject the application, and put it forward for all councillors to fully debate it.

The application from Muller England Ltd in Cleobury, which owns the buildings, was recommended for approval by district planners at the development control committee meeting on August 20. But after a discussion, the scrutiny panel rejected the application.

Paul Bethell, managing director of Muller England, said that the plan was going through a due process used for any application which moves away from policy.

“Hopefully we will get the green light for it to proceed,” he added.

Councillor Heather Kidd, who chaired the previous scrutiny meeting, said: “I hope that the members of council read the minutes of the scrutiny meeting because it gives a very clear picture of the difficulty of the decisions. It is really important that everybody comes having read them.”

Councillors are asked to give consideration to the decision made during the development control committee to approve the application with no affordable housing but with the provision that none of the houses approved would exceed three bedrooms.
