Church clock back in action after revamp
Tuesday 23rd September 2008, 6:59PM BST.
Crowds were clock-watching as an Ellesmere landmark was restored to its rightful place.
Workmen had to abseil down the tower of St Mary’s Church as its clock was re-installed following two weeks of refurbishiment work.
The Reverend Philip Edge, church vicar, said the clock was an important feature in the town.
He said it was visible from most areas.
The restoration work has cost about £5,000.
The money has been raised through the hard work of a fundraising group from the church.
Half of the money was provided by North Shropshire District Council’s historic buildings grant scheme, with the funds topped up by donations from Ellesmere Town Council, traders and residents.
The clock was made by JB Joyce & Co of Whitchurch.
The date of the clock is not on record, but is thought to have been made in the late 19th century to early 20th century.
On September 8 the two dials were removed and taken to JB Joyce to be restored, re-enamelled and re-gilded in gold leaf in their workshop.
Geoff Elner, town mayor, said the work was important for the whole town and people were delighted to see the clock back.
