Ladies are the best of British
Monday 22nd September 2008, 11:50AM BST.
They’ve done it! Shropshire Ladies are the new British county bowls champions. The celebrations went on long into the night after they won the national crown for the first time with a 19 chalk triumph over Warwickshire on Blackpool’s famous Waterloo.
Elated team captain Mabel Finnigan said today: “It was absolutely fantastic – I’ve never known such a day in all my life. We are absolutely over the moon.”
Shropshire were never behind in yesterday’s final, but it did get a bit tense towards the end before Sonya Lucas of St Georges scored the point that ensured they could not lose.
“Half way through we were 35 up, but then they came back a bit. But the girls at the back did the job – they were awesome.
Two 21-8 wins – by Helen Clee (Wrockwardine Wood) and Doris Nuttall (St Georges) – were vital as the rivals shared the 24 games.
“The atmosphere was unbelievable. There were hundreds there and maybe getting on towards 200 from Shropshire – and it helped make the difference.”
