Straw bales set on fire in field

Saturday 20th September 2008, 10:00AM BST.

Arsonists are being blamed for a fire involving 140 tonnes of straw bales in a field near Telford.

Firefighters from Wellington tackled the blaze at Eaton Constantine shortly after 10.30pm yesterday.

Crews returned to the scene today to inspect the remains of the fire to ensure there was no risk of it reigniting.

They were forced to let the straw burn, totally destroying the stack of bales.

Sub officer Ian Leigh, from Wellington station, said: “Luckily it was in the middle of a field so there weren’t any residential properties affected.”
