Council in Bucks bid
Friday 19th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.
Telford & Wrekin Council hopes to buy the West Stand at AFC Telford United’s ground.
The stand, which includes conference facilities, restaurant, health club and also a bar, is likely to be converted into retail premises.
It would add to the council’s existing holding of the other stand at the New Bucks Head and the learning centre.
This would help in the creation of Telford Sports Leisure and Enterprise Community, a major project sponsored by Sports England.
About £400,000 has been earmarked for the deal.

Exactly how much public consultation has taken place regarding this ‘proposed purchase’? In one of the most deprived areas of Telford you are looking to purchase a building that currently employes in excess of 50 people and convert it into ‘retail premises’. How many redundancies will this create. If you have concerns regarding college ward, then where is the investment in Arleston or Regent Street. Coucillor Davies I sincerely hope that you are going to object to this idiocy. If it aint broke dont fix it.

The Council have bought land around the ground, bought the pub outside, own I think it is one stand or something similar.
Only £400k is quite a bargain when your spending tax payers money.
But to try and even things out a little, many young people have benefitted from the work carried out at the ground,Telford AFC have gone from strength to strength and the Chairman is extremely committed.
Really it’s a case of 6 and two 3′s

Jeremy: Very valid point!
It seems that the coucil want to take over a sucessful area and claim that the have made it sucessful again when they redevelop it. Pity they couldn’t attemot a more challenging project with public money.

Isnt it about time the council actually used the taxpayers cash for something we actually need? The existing facilities at this venue are fine as they are – and thats decent leisure facilities that cater for private individuals. Why would we want ‘retail’ there to deprive this overcrowded area further with useless cheap shops? There are many town centres in the telford area that need major investment – how about looking at those?
