BOGOF treat for Rich Hall fans
Friday 19th September 2008, 10:06AM BST.
It will be two for the price of one when redneck songster Otis Lee Crenshaw plays at Wolverhampton’s Wulfrun Hall . . . for his “special guest” is none other than Crenshaw’s creator, king of deadpan Rich Hall.
The “pair’s” autumn comedy tour arrives at the Wulfrun on Sunday November 9.
Hall created and first performed as Otis in 1998, “a redneck jailbird from Tennessee, who has been married seven times, all to women named Brenda”.
Otis writes bourbon-soaked, Tom Waitsian tunes and blends this with audience banter, producing a perfect fusion of music and comedy.
He has been charming sell-out audiences each year at the Edinburgh Festival, throughout the UK on tour, at several festivals in Australia and at London’s famous Comedy Store, where he had a monthly slot for six months.
At the Edinburgh Festival 2000, “Rich Hall is Otis Lee Crenshaw” won the Perrier Award – the Oscars for Comedy in Britain.
Hall, as himself, has appeared on shows including Have I Got News For You and Jack Dee’s Sunday Service.
A Times review spoke of “belly laughs and aching sides”, while legendary American TV personality David Letterman said: “We say lots of people are funny. He’s the real thing.”
