Banger pilots in drive for charity

Thursday 18th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Pilots from Shropshire are pinning their hopes of completing a gruelling 1,500-mile drive across Europe in two clapped-out bangers.

Six airmen from RAF Shawbury have formed two teams for the official Staples2Naples banger rally, starting tomorrow.

The four-day road trip takes in routes through France, Switzerland and finally Italy.

Cars cannot be worth more than £100 and must be more than 12 years old, but must be taxed and have a valid MoT and insurance.

Shrewsbury car dealership Furrows which heard of the team’s efforts to raise money for the County Air Ambulance, has donated two old bangers for the challenge.

Squadron Leader Neil Hope said teams must negotiate treacherous mountain passes. First place will gain the winners £1,000.

The teams aim to raise £6,500 for the charity. For details, visit www.thewrongwaydown.org
