Millions of pounds are set to be pumped into the Powys economy to help boost the region’s tourism, culture and heritage. Up to £4 million of European funding will help develop rural projects.

Powys County Council announced today the money would help promote such things as green tourism, sustainable energy, culture, heritage and food.

The money has been funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Assembly Government.

John Stephenson, Powys Regeneration Partnership chairman, said: “This is a significant amount of additional money which I expect to have a real impact within the county.

“Powys has some very exciting projects that will support local business and help to improve the quality of life for all in our communities.”

He said the money would go towards supporting Powys festivals and events and provide support for small groups wishing to run an event that enhances the culture, rural heritage, economy, crafts and capacity of their community.

Low carbon communities such as Rhayader and Llanidloes, each of which is currently planning hydro-power schemes, will also benefit from the funding.

Powys is one of 18 local partnerships across Wales that have prepared programmes within the RDP.

The projects will be delivered by organisations such as Glasu, who delivered LEADER+, PAVO, Severn Wye Energy Agency, Powys Zero Waste, Mid Wales Manufacturing Group and Powys County Council itself.
