Wolves boss backing Vokes to flourish
Tuesday 16th September 2008, 11:49AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy believes youngster Sam Vokes is a fine example of the quality available in the Football League.
The 18-year-old struck twice late on as Wolves snatched a 3-1 victory at Charlton on Saturday to maintain their place at the top of the table.
The goals continued Vokes’ impressive form after scoring at Plymouth in the season opener and for Wales against Azerbaijan last week.
McCarthy, who brought in Vokes from Bournemouth over the summer, believes the player can flourish at Molineux.
McCarthy said: “There was a lot of interest in Sam from a lot of clubs but we were the ones to put our money where our mouth is.
“The problem is, with Premier League clubs, they would go and sign Sam Vokes and loan him out.
“Premier League fans wouldn’t find him sexy enough would they? That’s the problem – fans demand you spend £32m and if it all goes belly-up it’s a sad state of affairs.
“We are nurturing one of our own now.”
Wolves are back in action tonight as they host a Crystal Palace side fresh from a 2-0 victory over Swansea.
Birmingham, who trail their midlands rivals only on goal difference, travel to Bristol City.
