Walker must fight for Town place

Tuesday 16th September 2008, 1:25PM BST.

Richard WalkerShrewsbury Town striker Richard Walker made a welcomed return to training this morning – but may find it difficult to force his way back into a winning team.Summer signing Walker has not been seen since hobbling off with a hamstring injury against Aldershot three weeks ago.

The Bristol Rovers loanee must have been itching to get involved as he watched Dave Hibbert ably partner Grant Holt upfront in the weekend’s magnificent seven showpiece against Gillingham – now the long road back into first team contention begins.

With Town sitting pretty in fourth position and playing a brand of attacking football rarely previously witnessed in these parts, changing the team is probably the last thing on Paul Simpson’s mind, but a deep squad of quality is vital at this level.

“Walker will need a week or two in training before he can be considered,” said Simpson.

“We will look to get him involved in the reserve game against Macclesfield next Wednesday.”

But Walker may get his chance to restate his claim sooner rather than later.

Holt’s work ethic and constant chasing back has seen him pick up four bookings from his first seven appearances in blue and amber – one more would earn the record signing a one match suspension.

Fellow striker Michael Symes is also expected to return to training by the end of the week despite suffering a bit of a set-back yesterday.

Paul Murray and David Hunt are still working with the physio in the treatment room.

While supporters still revel in Saturday’s sensational display, Simpson is adamant that his players will not be getting carried away on the wave of optimism sweeping down Oteley Road.

“It’s not really a case of keeping the player’s feet on the ground this week because they are a level headed bunch and know what they have to do,” he said.

“Obviously there is a good feeling around the club at the moment because everything is going well. The reserves and the youth are doing well and that is also pleasing.

“I watched the youth last night and whilst we should be expecting to win that game (5-0 v Solihull Moors), I thought the way they went about it was excellent.”

The boss has worked towards and has publicly stated his wish for strength in depth. With Richards’ untimely injury Davie HIBBERT has done a sterling job and if fit would be disappointed not to play against Chester. The fringe players will have learnt the high standards required and Dave HIBBERT is testimony to that. Just a word about Saturday, I thought Sean THORNTON was excellant. A creative midfield player at last who worked tidily in the attacking third. Keep it up lads.
