Slab victim tells of attack
Monday 15th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.
A 22-year-old man from Market Drayton who had a paving slab dropped on him during a gang attack today told how the attack left him scared to go out.The victim, who did not want to be named, said the unprovoked attack in the early hours of Saturday had left him needing an operation on his fractured left leg.
He was walking home with his girlfriend in Donnington, Telford, when he was approached by four youths aged 16 to 17.
“They said something to me and then I ignored it and then they just came at me,” he said. “They all came from different areas.
“Two of them punched me, another one punched me on the jaw which caused me to fall to the floor. I was knocked out for about 12 seconds.”
The victim said he remembered trying to sit up and seeing the slab come down on his leg.
He managed to get up and hobbled to his girlfriend’s home in Donnington – where he is currently staying – and they called for an ambulance.
He said doctors had detected blood at the back of his knee and he faced another operation in two weeks’ time.
“I am scared to go out and scared of people I don’t know,” he said. “I will never walk around Donnington again.”
He said his attackers did not steal anything from him and he was not carrying a phone or wallet anyway.
One of the gang had short dark hair and another had a hooded top. They are believed to have been walking in St Matthew’s Road, Donnington.
Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said inquiries were continuing into the incident, which took place between about 1am and 4am.
