Pair seriously hurt in pole smash

Two men were seriously injured, one critically, when the car they were travelling in collided with an electricity pole in a village near Shrewsbury.The 20-year-old driver of the car suffered a serious head injury and was cut free from the red Mazda by firefighters after becoming trapped in the crash on the A488 near the Cock Inn in Hanwood at about 10.45pm on Saturday.
He was taken to the intensive care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where his condition was today said to be critical.
The passenger, believed to be in his 20s, was out of the car when ambulance crews arrived and had suffered serious multiple injuries.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
He is said to be in a stable condition there today.
Police said the car collided with an electricity pole, which brought power cables down, and was found in a garden near the pub.
Central Networks said 17 properties lost power as a result of the incident, but a total of 98 homes were left without power for several hours to enable engineers to work safely.
Meanwhile, a motorcyclist in his 30s was killed after his bike collided with a lorry and a car. The accident happened on the A44 Llangurig to Aberystwyth road in Powys at 2.30pm yesterday.
Elsewhere, a south Shropshire man suffered multiple injuries after a car overturned at Overton Grange Hotel near Ludlow early this morning.
And a man was taken to hospital with back pain after a collision involving two cars on the A5 near Weston Park, just after 5.30pm on Saturday.
