Foodies flock to annual festival

Thousands of foodies have been flocking to the opening of Ludlow’s three-day food festival.

The event kicked off yesterday with trails, tastings and demonstrations from some of the best chefs in the country. Attractions also include the fringe festival event starting today, slow food taste workshops, fun things to do for children and culinary demonstration by Michelin-starred chefs.

Ludlow’s food trails also play a major part in the activities. Thousands of people will take part in the town’s sausage trail today sampling new varieties made by five county butchers especially for the weekend.

Little ones can enjoy circus skills events in castle gardens, making pizzas, apple pressing and pedal power drink-making.

Slow food taste workshop will have foodies in gourmet heaven with samples of Hereford beef, game, ice cream, perry and bread at various times throughout the weekend.

Guests from Ludlow’s two twin towns – La Ferte Mace in Normandy, France and San Pietro in Cariano, Italy – will also be offering a taste of their regions’ finest produce and showing off their cheese cutting skills.

Tomorrow, Ludlow’s Sunday market will be filled with about 50 stalls between 10am and 4pm. The Events Square will have a rural feel as the NFU brings along some farm animals to provide information on farming issues.

The fringe event, which is a new venture for festival organisers, will include up to 25 stalls, the Local to Ludlow cooking marquee, a craft workshop and live music.

Chairman of the festival Phil Maile said that organisers were delighted with the turnout.

“Yesterday was very well attended but I would have said it was about what we had last year. Everybody seemed to enjoy it and there were no problems with the park and ride.

“We had six Michelin-starred chefs on the stage yesterday, giving demonstrations. The whole festival had a certain ambience.

“The weather is looking good for today – we have booked it especially.”
