Mystery today surrounded the sudden appearance of an “alien” sculpture which has landed on a Telford roundabout.The silver Martian, with its “Giz A Job” sign, is believed to have been put on to rocks on Jiggers Bank Roundabout, between Horsehay and Ironbridge, yesterday morning.

Made from bicycle wheels, metal bars, tennis balls and a bit of sticky-back plastic, the sculpture has caused quite a stir with passers-by.

Robert Hill, a paving and driveway contractor from Telford, was so keen to see what it was, he pulled over in his van and got onto the roundabout to see it up close.

He said: “I think it’s a really cool bit of artwork – it’s like an alien.

“I just saw it as I was driving by and I just had to stop and have a look at it – it’s great.”

Vivienne Needle, owner of Viv’s Country Kitchen roadside cafe in Buildwas Bank, near to the roundabout, said: “We think it was put there around 8am yesterday.

“There needs to be more art in Telford, there’s nowhere to see things like that unless you travel to galleries in Birmingham or Wolverhampton.”

But for the others the sculpture has proven an eyesore.

A truck driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I think it’s a monstrosity.

“To some people it will be seen as modern art but it’s going to cost us council taxpayers to move it, isn’t it?”

With 100 cyclists on the Tour Of Britain racing through the area yesterday, the appearance of the man made of bike parts, was believed to be a homage to the race.

Nobody from Telford & Wrekin Council was available to comment today.
