Knife waved in robbery attempt

Tuesday 2nd September 2008, 10:57AM BST.

A gang of hooded youths – including one who pulled out a knife – wrestled a man to the ground and attempted to rob him as he walked in Telford.

Up to four men approached the victim from behind as he walked in Stafford Park, close to the footbridge, at 6.05pm yesterday, police said.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police, said: “The male victim reported being assaulted by two youths. He was rugby tackled from behind and they shouted at him to give them his money. One waved a knife in a threatening manner.”

Mr Ammonds said the gang, who were dressed in black hoodies, fled the scene empty-handed in the direction of the motorway.

“The victim lost his glasses during the attack. He was not injured apart from being tackled to the ground.

“No property was stolen but the demands for money were made.

The victim has described one of the attackers as white and said two of them were black.

Mr Ammonds said police were investigating the incident and urged any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
