Decision due over market

Saturday 30th August 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Traders in Market Drayton could be in line for a business boost if plans for a £600,000 revamp are approved.

Cabinet members at North Shropshire District Council will meet on Monday to discuss the facelift, which would see the market get a new roof and new stalls, and the car park refurbished.

A report to go before councillors said the improvements would allow traders to showcase their products, and increase their businesses.

But there is concern that traders may have to open six days a week after work is complete.

The scheme includes the resurfacing of the arcade leading into Cheshire Street, the re-cladding of the ceiling areas in both the arcade and the Cheshire Street areas, and the creation of a focal point at the entrance to the arcade from the car park.

A new cafe and seating area are proposed, as well as the possibility of a demonstration kitchen for restaurants and food groups to use.

Rob Bentley, Market Drayton mayor, said he was in favour of the plans.

“I’m definitely in favour of the market being upgraded. I hope they intend to do it, it needs upgrading.

“It’s an important part of Drayton, and it’s under used, so if we can get it upgraded we can get it used more.

“Upgrading it can only be a good thing. It’s quite dark in there at the moment, so a new roof would let some light in,” he said.

The meeting takes place at the council chamber, Edinburgh House, Wem, at 3pm.
