Pupils face wait as staff query marks in IT exam
Thursday 28th August 2008, 11:16AM BST.
Dozens of IT pupils at a Shropshire school face a wait for their examination results after teaching staff asked for the diploma to be remarked.
About 40 pupils at the Grove School in Market Drayton, who took the Diploma in Digital Application which is equivalent to a GCSE, will have to wait until mid September for their results.
Head teacher Jane Radbourne said the moderated results were received last week, but they were so different to the internal marks, the school asked for them to be remarked.
They are now expecting the results back next month.
Mrs Radbourne said students have received their internal marks, so they would not be disadvantaged in moving to further education.
She said the results she received from Edexcel were “miles out”, and they claimed only eight students had passed, whereas internal marking showed 58 students had passed.
“The results were miles out. I did try my best to get things resolved with the exam board, but it’s just one of those things, and I don’t think we are the only school in this position,” she said.
“The most important thing is none of the students are disadvantaged in moving on to what they want to do post 16.”
Julie Pitcher, spokeswoman for Edexcel, said: “The school received the correct results on results day. Edexcel maintains the standard of teacher marking through external moderation. When work which has been marked internally by the school is moderated by Edexcel, it is possible for the marks to go up or down.
“If the school is unhappy with the moderated marks they can appeal the results through the usual process.”
