Town could get new coffee shop

Tuesday 26th August 2008, 6:59PM BST.

Part of a landmark Bridgnorth town centre building could be turned into a national coffee shop, agents revealed today.

The former Co-op supermarket premises at Postern Gate has been empty for almost a year, giving rise to much speculation about its future.

Agents Towler Shaw Roberts confirmed today that half of the ground floor space is under offer with Costa Coffee.

A spokesman for TSR said: “It’s not a completed deal yet but it is under offer with Costa Coffee and I believe it is now in the hands of solicitors.

“It’s difficult to see what we would do with the rest of the building without spending a lot of money. But we’ve had quite a lot of interest – it’s been mainly for retail space on the ground floor.”

Andy Silverwood, of Birmingham chartered surveyors Wright Silverwood, joint letting agents with Towler Shaw Roberts, said that Costa Coffee would be submitting a planning application to Bridgnorth District Council in the near future.

He added: “There is interest for the rest of the building but I can’t disclose who that is yet.”

Co-op vacated the High Town building at the end of last October because it was losing money.

Last month, the Childhood & Costume Museum and tearoom on the first floor of the Newmarket Buildings also closed its doors.

Not another Costa coffee! They are getting as bad (and as expensive) as Starbucks now with branches cropping up all over the place. There are 4 in Ludlow now, how many do you need!!
