Blackspot road to be made safer

Plans are in the pipeline to improve safety on a section of road on the Shropshire/Welsh border which residents claim is an accident blackspot.

Calls for improvements were made after a crash on the increasingly busy A483 in Four Crosses on Thursday.

One man had to be airlifted to hospital after the collision outside the village’s garage which involved two heavy goods vehicles and a car.

One person was released from their vehicle by firefighters and the incident was attended by fire crews from Welshpool, Oswestry and Newtown.

After the crash, John Young, who has lived near the cross roads in Four Crosses for 25 years, described it an an accident blackspot and called for urgent action to be taken. He claimed there can be a bump or skirmish once a week and attention had to be brought to the dangers of the crossroad.

In response to his concerns, a Welsh Assembly spokeswoman said work was ongoing to look at how to make improvements to the stretch of road through the village.

She said: “A scheme to improve the A483 at Four Crosses is currently being looked at as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Trunk Road Forward Programme.”
