Dan RedfernA trio of young Shropshire cricketers have battled through the wet weather to make a splash on the national scene.

Tibberton’s Dan Redfern, who has just completed his education at Newport’s Adams Grammar School, scored his maiden one-day 50 for Derbyshire last night in a thrilling tied Pro40 clash with Yorkshire.

The England under-19 international scored an unbeaten 57 from 56 balls to help his team recover from 128-6 in pursuit of 214 for victory. Redfern’s innings included four fours and one six as Derbyshire came within a solitary run of unlikely victory.

Meanwhile, Ludlow’s Jack Edwards and Shrewsbury School’s Steve Leach have starred for the Midlands in the England under-14 festival at Loughborough.

Leach won the player of the tournament award – earning a one-year sponsorship deal with Gray Nicholls – after fine performances in scoring 53, 39 and 48 against other representative teams.

Edwards took three wickets in his opening over against London & East, before rain arrived.

* One of Shropshire cricket’s most memorable moments will be marked tomorrow when Shrewsbury’s National Knockout winning team of 1983 reunite on the 25th anniversary of their triumph. The special gathering will come during Shrewsbury’s derby with Wellington at London Road.
