Fine over worker’s severed fingers

Friday 22nd August 2008, 11:50AM BST.

A machinery firm has been fined £20,000 after a worker lost two fingers in an accident at her Telford workplace.

Manufacturer Conair Europe was today fined for supplying an unsafe knife cutter to Telford firm Mocap.

Conair, of Slough, Berkshire, was fined at Shrewsbury Crown Court today, having previously admitted breaching the Supply of Machinery Safety Regulations 1992.

The court heard Lindsay Upton was working at plastics manufacturer Mocap in Hortonwood, on March 13 last year, when some plastic piping became stuck in the knife cutter. She put her hand inside the machine to try to remove it, but lost her index and middle finger from her left hand.

Miss Rhona Campbell, prosecuting, said Conair had breached safety regulations three times, in that the machinery was not fitted with proper safety guards, a hazard assessment was not carried out, and the machine was unsafe.

She said Mrs Upton had claimed the accident had played a part in the breakdown of her marriage

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones imposed the £20,000 fine, and ordered Conair to pay court costs of £7,790.10.

“This was an accident which could have been avoided had the appropriate attention been given and that’s something which could have been done without undue difficulty,” he said.
