Plenty to work on for Bucks – Larry
Monday 18th August 2008, 11:50AM BST.
Assistant manager Larry Chambers insists AFC Telford United will not get carried away by their unbeaten start to the season, declaring: “We’ve had the rub of the green.”
The Bucks beat Blyth Spartans 2-1 on Saturday, goals from Martyn Naylor and Terry Fearns setting them on their way to a second consecutive home victory.
They were far from convincing, though, and Chambers, the assistant to boss Rob Smith, accepts they will need to improve to stay among the Blue Square North pace-setters.
“If we’re going to be up there this season then we’re going to have to win our home games,” said Chambers. “From that point of view it’s a big win.
“I’m pleased with the three points, I’m pleased with the start we’ve had but – again – I don’t think the performance was great.
“In all three games so far we’ve got away with things. We’ve probably scored at the right time and had the rub of the green. Fearnsy got a goal on Saturday to make it 2-0 at a time when they were pressing, and I think the same thing happened against Hinckley (a game Telford won 4-2 last Tuesday).
“We are getting away with things but the lads are aware – we’re not stupid. We still haven’t kept a clean sheet, so there’s a lot to work on.”
Chambers hopes confidence will improve as they pick up results and believes competition within the squad will lead to increased performance levels.
“We’ve got seven points out of nine without really playing well,” he added. “When we do click and sort the problems out then we’re going to be a difficult side to beat.
“At the moment we’ve got a hell of a lot of individual errors.
“There’s a bit of anxiety when you play at home, but hopefully the results will breed confidence because they are good players.
“The difficult thing for myself and Rob now is that everyone wants to play,” he added.
