County archery ace off target

Alison WilliamsonThere was more misery today for Shropshire’s Alison Williamson, whose bid for an individual archery medal ended in the second round.

The Athens bronze medallist was expected to be in medal contention after qualifying seventh on Saturday, but although she beat Chinese Taipei’s Wei Pi-Hsiu 108-99 in the first round, she was unable to reach Thursday’s final stages after losing 112-108 to the USA’s Khatuna Lorig.

It was a bitter blow for Williamson, from Church Stretton, who broke down in tears yesterday as she blamed herself for the women’s team’s failure to clinch a medal when they lost the bronze shoot-off to France.

Williamson said yesterday: “I feel basically that I let the other two down, that I should have pulled my weight more and I didn’t.”

Today, her father Tom said he shared his daughter’s disappointment.

He said: “It’s been four years of hard work and to finish fourth in the team event is hard.

“I think I’d rather she finished further down because fourth is tough.

“We thought a team medal was theirs. But in the individual event I thought she shot very well.

“She is competing with the top 64 in the world and there is very little separating them. We are still very proud of her.”
