Happy slapper boy behind bars

Monday 11th August 2008, 11:50AM BST.

phone-matt.jpgA Telford teenager was behind bars today after becoming the first person in Shropshire to be convicted for filming a vicious “happy slap” attack. The youth filmed a 13-year-old boy being assaulted by two other teenagers on his mobile phone.

Now the three, all from Telford and aged 14 and 15, have been given 12-month detention orders after they all admitted their part in the attack.

Prosecutors today welcomed the sentence in the case, which they said was the first recorded “happy-slapping” conviction in Shropshire.

Phil Mason, senior crown prosecutor, who dealt with the case, said: “This was a nasty assault, in fact one of the worst I have viewed during my time as a prosecutor, and the assailants were clearly encouraged by the fact it was being videoed.

“It shows someone videoing an offence for the participants’ gratification and is regarded as taking part in the crime, even if they do not physically do so, and cannot escape the consequences of their actions.”

The attackers were sentenced for assault causing actual bodily harm, while the third who filmed it was sentenced for aiding and abetting the crime, when they appeared at Telford Youth Court on Friday. None of the youths can be identified for legal reasons.

Claire Riley-Walshe, Shropshire district crown prosecutor, said: “I am delighted with this result, which sends out a strong message these offences, including the act of videoing the assault, are serious crimes.”

Chris Ammonds, Telford Police spokesman, said: “We welcome the fact this incident has been treated so seriously by the courts.

“This type of incident is extremely rare in Telford, but we would take any reports of this nature very seriously.

“The victims in this type of case tend to be caught by surprise and can be traumatised by the incident.”

The craze of “happy slapping”, where someone films an attack on another person on a mobile phone, has swept the country in the last two years. Often the films are posted on social networking websites.

The Crown Prosecution Service says the conviction for aiding and abetting by filming is the first of its kind in Shropshire.

Too right. For too long this country has been far too soft on anti social behaviour from under 18′s.

We need strictor laws to punish misbehaving youths and also to punish parents who for whatever reason do not bring up children to understand the difference between right and wrong.

These parents of the children above should have been severly punished before the this came to court ie very big fines and the children being taken into care.

I would also go further to add that these parents should be looking at a 2 year stint behind bars themselves

Good! It’s about time something was done about this kind of crime, the sooner these oiks realise it’s zero tolerance perhaps crime rates will drop and stay down.

If misbehaving youths understand its zero tolerance and if the parents understand this it will reduce anti social behaviour no end.

New York employed zero tolerance years ago and the crime rate in NYS has reduced by over 70%

I agree, i am sick and tired of hearing these awful, sickening stories. As for the comments about the parents, in an ideal world punishing them would be a good idea to scare the youngsters, but in the real world I’d doubt the youngsters would even care, they dont have that sought of respect for their parents, they dont respect anyone.

BECk if the children do not respect the parents whose fault it that?

In my view that is the parents fault for not bringing the children they bring into this world up correctly.

For that one reason the parents are JUST as responsible as the children.

If parents actually took an interest in their children each evening instead of sitting down in front of the idiot box or going to pubs and ignoring what out of control childrenetc this world would be a safer and nicer place.

Definitely name and shame these people. If they know they are going to be legally protected from the outside world they will comit these offences time and time again.

Parents should get there act together – there is nothing happy about slapping strangers in the street esp as it seems that the elderly have been targetted over the years. Wise up and start taking responsibility for your offsprings actions.

These kids have been dealt just punishment for their crime. Thank god the judiciary is coming to it’s sences at last.
However people are blaming these kids actions on their parents. Let me tell you from personla experience this is not always the case. I have three children, all grown up now. However one of my children has been a constant problem getting in trouble with the law and the use of drugs. My other two children have grown up, work hard and have never been in trouble with the law. we have never treated any of our children differentlty than the other. So it is unfair to automatically blame parents. Think back to when you were a kid. Did you do everything your parenst told you. I certainly didn’t

Parents have lost any right they had to bring their kids up right. You can’t stop them from going out when grounded because THEY have the right to freedom, you can’t smack for fear of being reproted to child line, you stop pocket money they find other ways of getting hold of cash. I’m not just making excusses but it’s hard to keep control these days. And this sort of trouble has always been there it just seems worse because they film it on their phones. Bullying, heavy drinking, drugs and stealing all went on when i was at school too.

Kids right from the age of 10 or 11 KNOW when they are doing something wrong; it’s about time the legal age limit was lowered (especially with this kind of crime). Surely we have a right to know who they are? Name and shame them, they don’t have the right to anonimity.

I agree, im 19, i have a good job, i pay taxes and i know whats right and wrong. I wasnt brought up in the best parts of Telford but i wanted to make something of myself and later on in the year will take an open uni course in English so i can improve and get a better job -im fed up of people being stereotypical about young people. I can understand though that being brought up in an environment where you have to be ‘hard’ and fighting gives you respect does make other young people have a harder start in life. I think its up to the individual to break away from the mould but maybe some may need help that could be backed from the government? I pay taxes and i think an initiative like that, that would actually help people in these situations would not only be a great help to communities and the individual but would also prevent greater amounts of money being spent on later crimes or youth hostels?
I do agree that for violent crimes like this however a stint in Afghanistan will teach them respect that they need.

I agree with Harry Saxon, we need some corporal and i think capital punishment in this country, the recent church of england vhap who backed Sharia Law has a very good point, physical punishment be in sheer hard work or a good beating, is needed to make justice visible and prevent reoffending but also to make it an actual punishment, after all in prison these days they have tv, playstation etc, apparently they are all getting obese in there, so hard labour yes bring it all back, flogging, stocks the lot – it worked

I’ve always been an advocate of corporal punishment. The day they banned it in schools was the day the rot set in, with no discipline for the children and no respect for the teachers. A good hard smack never did me any harm, but it did deter me from doing wrong. That’s what the little brats from south east Telford really need.
