Litter louts fined in crackdown

Saturday 9th August 2008, 10:45AM BST.

waste.jpgMore than 40 people have been fined for littering in Telford & Wrekin since the beginning of 2008, it was revealed today.

A total of 44 offenders have been issued with fixed penalty notices this year after being caught dropping litter.

Almost all of them admitted responsibility for the offence and paid the £50 fine. Environment chiefs at Telford & Wrekin Council have vowed to get tough on litter louts.

They say the small minority of litter droppers that have not paid their fine will be dealt with by magistrates.

Councillor Stephen Bentley, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We spend £2 million each year clearing up litter the irresponsible minority have discarded on our streets.

“It is not acceptable to spoil our local environment in this way, it is lazy and anti-social. We have 1,700 litter bins in Telford & Wrekin, why not use them?”

Acclaimed author Bill Bryson, president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the voice behind its Stop the Drop drive, said: “Litter is becoming the default condition of the British roadside. Often these days you feel as if you are driving through a kind of large, informal linear tip. Surely we are entitled to expect better.”

One litter dropper, David Jinks, 20, of Hadley, Telford, was ordered to pay an £80 fine, £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge in May for discarding a cigarette end.

In 2006 Marie Jones, of Wellington, was fined £100 and ordered to pay £300 costs by magistrates in Telford in the first prosecution of its kind in the borough.

She was spotted throwing a cigarette out of her car window by a council enforcement officer.

Only 40 people fined in over 6 months???

Not a day goes by that I dont see someone throw litter onto the floor, usually cigarette ends, although if its from a car frequently it is also the empty packet and the celophane from the new packet. We need more officers, they should be fining 40 people a day, and while they have them, perhaps a fine for dangerous driving, as it cant possibly be safe to unwrap a packet of cigarettes, withdraw one and apply a naked flame to it whilst driving !

I agree more fines for litter bugs
and then we could have a council tax reduction with all the money made from fines

good to hear – i wish the council in shrewsbury would take such a stance – have you seen the amount of litter around the Battlefield Link Road (mostly shrink wrap from the warehouses) and the Meole Retail Park (mostly sainsbury’s orange plastic carrier bags) Its disgusting, we must all use less plastic, be more careful with our waste generally and the Council must show some leadership and push up recycling and recovery and get really tough of litter yobs, individuals and big corporations alike

I think they should give them the option of paying or doing the work (at minimum wage rates) so a £60 fine could be done as 10 hrs of litter picking with the Council, all whilst wearing a high viz jacket with “i am criminal scum” or some such posted on the back

one thing T & C council is doing correctly at least.
Now how about rounding up some of the feral youngsters on the streets and sorting out the 70′s planning problem which is Sutton Hill, brookside and woodside

David, I’ve been smoking in my cars for over 20 years and have never dropped one in my lap. And I drive >20,000 miles per year.

What I do watch out for when pitching my cigarette butt out of the window is for motorcyclists or drivers of open convertibles behind. What I don’t wish to do is fiddle around with the ashtray lid (which in the Jag is quite a stretch), and spend precious seconds with my body at an acute angle attempting to put it out.

I fully applaud blatant litterers being fined for – say – fly tipping large quantities of refuse in unauthorised areas (or those idiots who – at my local park – saw it fit to throw dozens of beer bottles and the associated packaging over a large area frequented by children and dog walkers). But £400 for pitching a cigarette butt from a car window???? That would mean, with strict enforcement at all times – when both stationary and driving – myself (and no doubt all other “dirty tabbers”) being fined £730,000 per year. For depositing approx. 0.011 cubic metres of “litter”.

The words “sense” and “perspective” need to apply here.

like i said before, if you are going to drop litter, buy a caravan, park in a field, dump all of your rubbish and then move on.
You will not be fined, arrested, nothing.
    Great idea!!!
