Devastation as girl dies on holiday

Saturday 9th August 2008, 12:43PM BST.

An 11-year-old Shropshire schoolgirl has died after collapsing while on a family holiday. Layla Pitt was a pupil at Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge Primary School.

She was on holiday in Porthmadog, North Wales, when she collapsed in a supermarket in Caernarfon.

The talented ballet and tap dancer and singer was rushed to Bangor Hospital on Tuesday before being transferred to Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

She died from a brain haemorrhage the next day.

Her devastated parents, Tristan and Rachel, of Ivatt Close, Dawley, Telford, today paid tribute to their eldest daughter, who was due to start at William Brookes School in Much Wenlock next month.

Mrs Pitt said: “She was so, so excited to be starting secondary school. When I bought her tie, she wore it to Coalbrookdale the next day. I’d got her uniform and everything.

“Layla just wanted to be liked by everyone – that meant the world to her.”

Mrs Pitt said Layla collapsed seconds after telling her parents she had a pain in her neck. “She was perfectly fit, healthy and active,” she said. “There was no way anyone could have ever known.”

Her parents said Layla spent hours writing scripts and also choreographed her own performances. She had been a member of Car-michael School of Dance since she was two.

Teresa Askins, her “Nanna”, said: “There were lots of things she wanted to do and always wanted to make things better for people. She was truly like a little burst of sunshine.”

Layla was also named as a Citizen of the Year by West Mercia Police earlier this year after saving her younger brother, Alfie, three, from the sea. She also leaves her sister, Liberty, seven.
