Veteran stars to play charity match
Wednesday 6th August 2008, 12:59AM BST.
Football stars of yesteryear will be taking part in a charity match against a Mid Wales club later this month.
The likes of former England international Gordon Cowans, Nigel Spink and Irish midfield star Mark Kinsella are expected to line up for the Aston Villa Old Stars football team v Abermule All Stars XI at Abermule Community Centre, near Newtown, on August 24 at 2.30pm.
All proceeds raised will be shared between the Abermule Community Centre, the Hope House Children’s Hospice and Montgomeryshire Junior Football Club.
Neil Rioch, a former player at the club and now chairman of the Aston Villa Former Players Association, said: “The Aston Villa Old Stars football team is delighted to be returning to Abermule to support these worthy causes, particularly after we received such a warm welcome last year.”
He added: “Our current squad includes many Villa legends such as Gordon Cowans, Tony Morley, Des Bremner, Nigel Spink, and Colin Gibson who all played in the side that won the League Championship and European Cup in the 1980s.
“The squad also includes other former Aston Villa greats from more recent years such as Steve Staunton, Mark Walters, Tony Daley, Mark Kinsella and Garry Parker and others.”
The football match will be the highlight of a family fun day that will also include a raffle, DJ, bar, bouncy castle and food.
Entry for adults is £3 but free for children.
