Nature day kicks off canal festival

Wednesday 6th August 2008, 12:59AM BST.

An open day this weekend at a nature reserve will signal the start of a major festival celebrating the Montgomery Canal.

The open day at the Aston Nature Reserve near Queens Head, Oswestry, will be held on Sunday as part of the Monty 08 canal festival.

Volunteers have created an extension to the original reserve and invite the public along between 10am and 4pm.

The open day will kick start a whole host of activities during the Monty 08 canal festival.

The main events of the festival, organised by Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust, are rallies at Welshpool on August 30 and 31 and at Maesbury Marsh on September 5 to 7.

At Welshpool, resident boats will be joined by visiting boats bought from far and wide by road. The Maesbury Marsh rally will see more than 40 boats coming from across the inland waterway network.

There will be a range of attractions at both rallies.
