County’s victory bid drenched
Wednesday 6th August 2008, 11:49AM BST.
Shropshire’s hopes of a morale-boosting win in the Minor Counties Cricket Championship clash away to Wales were washed away in a day of torrential rain.
The western division fixture in Abergavenny had seemed to be Shropshire’s for the taking at the end of the second day on Monday as they engineered themselves into a winning position.
But they were forced to endure a frustrating morning yesterday hoping for the weather to improve before the match was finally abandoned shortly after lunch.
Shropshire had reduced Wales to 65-3 in their second innings, chasing an unlikely 399 for victory.
“It’s disappointing, but you can’t control the weather,” said chairman of selectors Trevor Sheperd.
“The forecast had always said it was going to be a wet day so we knew this was a possibility.”
l It was a similar story at Eastnor as Herefordshire and Cheshire were forced to settle for a draw in their western division clash.
