Piglet dies after prank

Tuesday 5th August 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Cruel pranksters are being blamed for the death of a tiny piglet found wandering at night in Wellington. The week-old piglet was rescued by a local teenager, taken to an emergency vets’ clinic and cared for at a smallholding.

But the little fellow, which should really have been receiving mother’s milk, failed to survive.

Karen Booth, senior veterinary surgeon at the out-of-hours Vets Now service in Wellington, said she was greatly saddened to hear it had died.

“The piglet was found by a local teenager at around 2.30am on Sunday looking lost and disorientated,” she said.

“He got into a cab, took the piglet home to his parents and they tried to feed it milk from a bottle without success before bringing it in to us.

“I can only assume that someone thought it funny to steal a piglet and let it loose as a prank among revellers in Wellington.”
