Deadline looms for illegal campers

The travellers’ camp

Travellers camping on private land in Telford could be moved on at any time as their deadline to leave or face being physically removed looms, police said today.

Landowner English Partnerships issued the travellers with a common law eviction notice, giving them until 7pm today to move on or face being ejected from fields near Hadley Park roundabout.

Tony Cox, English Partnerships bailiff, said today: “The travellers have still officially got until 7pm tonight to vacate the site.

“While the earliest we can physically remove them is Thursday morning, my gut feeling is that the travellers will move on tonight.”

He added that the bailiffs would prefer to act with police on standby when they swoop on the site to enforce an eviction notice.

But police were today staying tight-lipped about the precise timescale of their plans to deal with the encampment.

Telford Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: “Plans are being put in place with regards to this encampment and we are expecting to move forward in the very near future.”

Speaking from the site on Saturday, Mossey Murphey, one of the travellers, had said he was expecting another 40 caravans to arrive in the following few days. He had said they would be putting up a marquee for a wedding and planned to stay a month.
