Teenage councillor aims to help

Monday 4th August 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Councillor George HumphriesTeenager George Humphries is looking forward to making an impact in the Shropshire village where he lives – after being appointed one of the county’s youngest ever councillors.

George has been co-opted on to Shawbury Parish Council, becoming its youngest ever member. He said he plans to go to university to study medicine next year, but saw becoming a councillor as an opportunity to make a difference in his village.

Councillor Humphries also hopes his age will be an advantage, in that he will be able to improve the relationship between the council and young people.

“I wanted to become a councillor because I saw it as an opportunity to make a difference in the community,” he said.

“I hope to ease the youth problem there is. There’s no easy answer, but I hope to make it better.

“I hope I can improve communication between different groups in the village and offer a different viewpoint on issues. I’m representing everyone, so I will get involved in everything I can, although the youth issue is probably the biggest issue.”

Mr Humphries, who turns 19 in October, was co-opted onto the council along with Councillor Dave Roberts by other members last week, after making a short speech about why he wanted to serve in Shawbury.

“I went in quite focused and I knew what I was going to say,” said the former pupil of The Thomas Adams School in Wem.

Good for George, I just hope the “older” councillors do not try to intimidate him, with the old “this is how we do things”.
