Canoe boss trial starts

Monday 4th August 2008, 11:50AM BST.

The trial of a Welsh outdoor pursuits centre manager who faces health and safety charges over the death of a canoeist was due to start today.

David Proctor, 57, from Capel Bethania in Llanwddyn, who runs Bethania Adventure at Lake Vyrnwy, denies three health and safety offences. The trial is being held at Wrexham Magistrates Court.

The charges relate to an incident on August 2, 2004, when David Phillips, 68, and his wife Brenda, of Buckinghamshire, were in a canoe that was hit by a wave. Mr Phillips drowned as he tried to swim ashore.
