MP backing phone fight

Saturday 2nd August 2008, 6:59PM BST.

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has backed the campaign to save 190 payphones under threat from British Telecom.

Mr Bates said that he would be supporting the fight to retain the payphones, because they offer a vital service to people in rural areas who do not always have a mobile phone signal.

He added: “The proposals by BT could result in 44 per cent of payphones being removed across Powys, with many local communities facing the withdrawal of these potentially life-saving facilities.
