Jagielka to cover after Forsdick op

Saturday 2nd August 2008, 11:49AM BST.

Steve JagielkaWing-back Simon Forsdick will miss the start of AFC Telford United’s season – but boss Rob Smith is backing Steve Jagielka to prove a more-than adequate stand-in.

Forsdick went in for surgery last week to sort out a long-standing knee injury and, despite positive reports of his progress, he will not return until the middle of the month.

With Asa Charlton – the other natural left-sided defender in the Telford squad – suspended for the first two games of the campaign – Smith will turn to former club captain Jagielka.

“Simon just had bruising on his cartilage and it’s nothing too major so he should be ready in two-to-three weeks,” the Bucks chief confirmed.

“It was quite positive really because there was no major damage and we now know his knee will be as good as new.

“He will miss the start of the season but we’re not too badly off because we’ve got Steve Jagielka and he’s been tremendous – he’s been our shining star in pre-season.

“He’s got himself in good shape and his experience counts for a lot. I’d have no qualms about playing him in there.”

Jagielka has played in virtually all of AFC Telford’s pre-season friendlies and has usually started out on the left despite preferring a central role.

“He hasn’t had much of a chance to play in the middle of the park where he want to be, but it’s been a case of needs must,” added Smith.

“He’s one of the best club men I’ve ever worked with. He never gives you an ounce of trouble and is a top guy.”
