Former PM’s desk up for auction
Friday 1st August 2008, 12:00AM BST.
Dozens of bidders are expected to flock to a Mid Wales town on August 8 in an attempt to secure a sale on a desk, believed to have belonged to a former Prime Minister.
The desk, which is thought to have belonged to David Lloyd George, is one of a number of antiques going under the hammer in Welshpool Town Hall.
It is expected to create great interest from dealers across the country and from historians, as Lloyd George was the first and only Welsh Prime Minister, serving from 1916 to 1922, and the last Liberal to hold office. Auctioneers Harry Ray and Company, on Broad Street, in Welshpool, uncovered the oak, George III drop leaf bureau, by chance when clearing the home of the late Dr Gareth Williams at Nantcribba in Forden.
Jim Mason of Harry Ray and Company said he had no idea how much the desk would be sold for.
“A desk like this usually sells for hundreds but because of who it may have belonged to we don’t know how much it will sell for,” he said.
