Action by authority on young drinkers
Monday 28th July 2008, 6:59PM BST.
Action is being taken to address the problem of teenagers binge drinking in Oswestry.
Oswestry Borough Council has been told Oswestry’s teen drinkers have admitted regular “binge” sessions – drinking nine or more units of alcohol at a time.
The problem was highlighted earlier this year, but members of the council’s scrutiny committee are set to be updated on the action being taken at a meeting tomorrow.
At a previous meeting, councillors heard almost half the young people who took part in a survey said they drink at least once a week, with 50 per cent of under 18s questioned getting their alcohol from their parents.
The town, identified as a alcohol hotspot by Shropshire’s Young People and Alcohol Partnership, has launched a local area action plan to deal with the issues of teenage drinking.
The survey was of 225 people, mostly aged 10-18.
Outlining the results to the council at April’s meeting, Inspector Jim Stafford, of Oswestry police, said most teenagers had their first alcoholic drink by the age of 13 and of all those surveyed almost half admitted being regular drinkers, drinking at least once a week.
Tomorrow’s meeting starts at 6.45pm in the council chamber, in Castle View, Oswestry.

Visible policing in the town would help, instead of the speed camara van on the A5. We pay enough tax! we deserve better. Then again who really cares?

Fine the parents 500quid if the children are under the age of 18 that will soon ensure that parents take a VERY keen interest in what naughty offspring are up to.
If over 18 and binge drinking I would suggest packing them off to deprived areas to do community service – cleaning off graffiti, picking up litter etc for about a month

good on them – string them up i say

It’s not just down to bad parenting. You just can not keep your kids locked up all day. Our daughter has to be in by 8.00 and we have made it very clear what she shouldn’t be doing, but we would have to follower her everywhere to stop any trouble.

Its the EU I say that’s done this, jonny foreigner and his lot, hang them all I say, bring back national service and put them all in the work house, that will sort them,

You are so wrong – we should be giving the children lots of hugs and presents to make them behave.
And lots of rewards if they misbehave maybe a trip to Disneyland

it is down to education. do they want poisoned livers by age 25, or advanced dementia at 30. the choice appears to be theirs at the moment

Has anyone ever wondered why children might be drinking. There isnt enough activties or enjoyment for kids to enjoy. every child loves doing something and sometimes its the cost that stops this. maybe if the government would do something by putting money into children instead of speed cameras we might get some where.
Children drink to get attention off the opposite sex and also to cure their boredom. its not the childrens or parents fault its the lack of factilities offered to the children.

It says that half of them are getting the drink from their parents, are they stealing it or getting it given to them? I think there’s a more serious underlying problem here which needs the parents being trained to behave properly aswell as the kids (or at least keep their drink under lock and key!) I grew up in a relatively rural area with not enough to do and as a teen regularly used to end up with a group of my mates in the bus shelter. My parents would have been horrified if they knew and I lived in fear of them finding out, but the truth was there was nothing else to do without spending a lot more than the price of a bottle of cider.
