Free parking move for town is welcomed
Saturday 26th July 2008, 10:33AM BST.
Businesses in Shrewsbury today welcomed confirmation that parking will be free on three town centre car parks on Wednesdays – revealing hopes it will boost trade in the run-up to Christmas.
It is hoped the move, which was confirmed earlier this week, will help businesses recovering from the recent roadworks in the town centre which it has been claimed harmed trade.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council approved plans to introduce free parking at a meeting on Monday. Parking on car parks at Abbey Foregate, Frankwell and St Julian’s Friars will be free on Wednesdays from 2pm to 8pm from September 1 until December 31.
It was originally thought that parking would be free until 5pm, but assistant council manager Andy Goldsmith suggested this be extended, and councillors approved this proposal.
Today Simon Airey, chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, said: “Christmas is an extremely important time for all our businesses.
“Free parking is now going to coincide with Wednesday late-night opening which will be given a real boost.”
