telford-landscape.jpgVoters were going to the polls in Telford today in by-elections for seats on both the borough council and Oakengates Town Council.

The polls for both by-elections close at 10pm.

The Telford & Wrekin Council by-election is for one of the two Muxton ward seats. It was called following the resignation of Tory councillor Stuart Cain.

Mr Cain decided to stand down because of work commitments outside the borough.

His resignation has left the Tories with 26 seats on the borough council, level pegging with the combined total of Labour, Liberal, independent and Telford & Wrekin Peoples Association (TAWPA) councillors.

The Conservatives will, however, cling on to control until the by-election by virtue of their nominated “speaker”, Councillor Miles Hosken, who chairs meetings of the full council and has a casting vote.

Polling stations are at Muxton Primary School and the Lifelong Learning Centre, St Matthew’s Road, Donnington.

A separate by-election was also taking place today for a parish council seat for the Oakengates ward of Oakengates Town Council, following the resignation of independent councillor Steve Reece.

Polling stations are The United Church, in Stafford Road, and Ketley Bank Community Centre.

For details about the by-elections call Telford & Wrekin Council on (01952) 383201.
