MP holds last-ditch talks to save PO
Wednesday 23rd July 2008, 11:00AM BST.
A Shrewsbury post office could be saved from the axe at the eleventh hour after the town’s MP revealed he was meeting company bosses today for crunch talks.
Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury, and county councillor Alan Mosley, have joined forces in a last-ditch attempt to keep Ditherington Post Office in Mount Pleasant Road open.
The pair have arranged to meet Mark Partington, Post Office Ltd’s network development manager for Shropshire and Staffordshire, and his colleagues at Mr Kawczynski’s constituency office in Harlescott this afternoon.
Mr Kawczynski said he had been bombarded with calls and letters from residents asking for the facility to remain open.
He said he and Councillor Mosley would put forward compelling reasons why the post office should be spared.
The meeting comes less than a month after Post Office Ltd said 13 branches across Shropshire will definitely close, with 13 to be replaced by outreach services.
So far the only post office in the county to be reprieved is the Greenfields Post Office in Shrewsbury. Plans to close Randlay Post Office in Telford are under review.
Mr Kawczynski today said it was vital that rington Post Office was saved.
He said: “I have got the directors of Post Office Ltd to come and see me to talk about Ditherington Post Office because I am not just accepting the fact they want to close it.
“We are trying to try and get the decision reversed.”
