Bosses reveal aviation park plan

Wednesday 23rd July 2008, 11:25AM BST.

Wolverhampton AiportBosses at Wolverhampton Airport have revealed plans to create a multi-million pound aviation park, which they claim will redefine its function for decades to come.

The scheme will see the pre-war RAF base at Bobbington, near Bridgnorth, become the foundation for the exclusive redevelopment, which would also see new modern aeroplane hangars created.

It would also give business owners the chance to snap up made-to-measure industrial units.

The plans have been unveiled this week and an application for permission to go ahead with the development is now set to be handed over to South Staffordshire District Council’s planning chiefs.

Steve Winterflood, deputy chief executive of South Staffordshire Council, said he was aware that the plans had been in the pipeline.

“It is fair to say that the plans have been talked about for quite some time. They have been talking about the medium and long-term plans for the site,” he said.

News of the proposed redevelopment comes just months after campaigners feared controversial expansion plans for the airport had resurfaced.

Previous proposals to increase the size of the airport were met with opposition and people living in nearby Kinver, near Stourbridge, and Claverley, near Bridgnorth, were worried it would destroy their village.

But rumours that passenger flights would be offered from the site were quashed by airport bosses earlier this year.

Mar Properties, owners of the site, confirmed they had no intention of having passenger flights and that business aviation was the preferred option.
