Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today demanded one year contracts for all players as he joined football’s controversial “slaves” debate.

FIFA chief Sepp Blatter’s triggered a storm of outrage over his claims that football players were treated like slaves citing Cristiano Ronaldo being forced to honour his five-year deal at Manchester United instead of joining Real Madrid.

Now Wolves and former Ireland boss McCarthy has come up with his own plan to get players to stick to their contracts.

“Don’t get me on about Sepp Blatter – when I was Irish manager, I told him FIFA stood for ‘Forget Irish Football’ – I can’t believe some of the stuff he comes out with,” said McCarthy.

“Let’s all have just one year contracts. That will be interesting. They (players) want a bit of security when they sign, such as five-year contracts that are going to earn them £10m-£15m.

“If they then want to break that after 12 months, then give them one-year deals.

“There would have to be one or two who would have to pull their finger out, and there will no doubt be one or two yelling about it now I’ve said it.”

McCarthy revealed new signing Chris Iwelumo has fitted in well since his £400,000 move from Charlton.

“He’s a proper bloke. From the minute he walked into the place, he knows what it’s about and quite clearly looks after himself when you look at him physically and he’s fitted in perfectly,” said the boss.

“He’s got a good record at this level – 45 goals in the last three seasons, and not all the big target men get that many goals, so he’s done well.”

l Meanwhile Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson has dismissed reports that Wolves and Coventry are competing for his defender Kelvin Langmead.

Wolves were linked with a £75,000 bid for the converted striker at the weekend.

“People may think because I’ve signed a couple of defenders that I want Kelvin to leave but nothing could be further from the truth,” said the former Wolves winger.
