Campaigners have won their battle to briefly re-open a Ludlow street at a cost of up to £20,000, county councillors have revealed.

Traders fought to get Lower Corve Street open to local traffic after claiming that the closure of Burway Bridge was damaging business in the town.

Two Ludlow county councillors, Viv Parry and Peter Corston have agreed to support the initiative in spite of its steep price tag, and Shropshire County Council traffic bosses have confirmed it will briefly reopen from Monday. 

Councillor Corston said: “While I fully appreciate the views both for and against, concerning the re-opening of Lower Corve Street, I have been assured and accept that full safety considerations have been taken on board, especially regarding Ludlow School pupils and the fact that some properties are still being repaired following the floods.

“The cost of the work endorses the commitment of the council and local members to listen and act on local concerns.”

The north end of Lower Corve Street and the Burway Bridge will be controlled with traffic lights, the councillors say.

Phil Crossland, Shropshire County Council’s assistant director for transport and highways, said: “Once the bridge works are completed Lower Corve Street will return to no entry except for access.”
