Car park to shut for removal of spike

Friday 18th July 2008, 11:50AM BST.

An ornamental spike is damaged at the Darwin Shopping CentreAn 850-space multi-storey car park in Shrewsbury will have to close for a morning next month for work to remove an ornamental spike damaged by strong winds earlier this year.

The ornamental pinnacle was left hanging from its position on the roof of the Darwin Shopping Centre after it was battered by strong winds in March, leaving the Raven Meadows Car Park and neighbouring The Strand temporarily closed for safety reasons.

A crane will be brought in to remove the pinnacle on Sunday August 10 and it will be replaced with a similar structure.

The work will mean that the Raven Meadows Car Park and part of Raven Meadows road will be closed for a morning, but it is hoped it will be finished by lunchtime.

Nicholas Pitt, Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Centre manager, today said: “It’s going to be removed. We are replacing it with something that will do the same job.

“We can’t afford to leave it in its existing state. Though it is secure, it’s a temporary measure. The work will happen very early in the morning to minimise disruption to the public and we hope that it can be done in one morning.”

He said people would be able to use The Strand Car Park and Frankwell Car Park while the work took place, with a two-way traffic system expected to be in place on Roushill.
