Council rejects cash call for road

Bridgnorth Town Council has refused to give the district council £50,000 towards work on the town’s new relief road because it cannot afford it.
At last night’s town council meeting members received a report from Bridgnorth District Council requesting £50,000 towards the enhancement programme for Whitburn Street and Northgate as part of the relief road works.
Back in 2001 the town council had offered to give £50,000 but that money is no longer available.
However, the town council is willing to give £10,000 towards the work on the condition it knows where the money will be spent.
Members heard that at a special budget meeting held in January, 2001, it was minuted that £50,000 be allocated for Bridgnorth projects. At a special budget meeting held in January, 2003, it was decided that the £50,000 be reduced to £30,000 for the relief road.
Finally at a special budget meeting held in January, 2004, the £30,000 was reduced to £10,000.
Councillor Jennifer Durham said: “We simply haven’t got the £50,000 to give them, it’s now been spent on other things.
“They should have had it when it was there. We decided to use the money elsewhere and elsewhere it has gone. We should only give them a maximum of £10,000.”
