£100,000 to be spent on community

Wednesday 16th July 2008, 6:59PM BST.

Council chiefs are set to splash out about £100,000 on schemes across north Shropshire in a bid to mark the end of an era on a high.

The windfall, which has come from council savings will be spent before the county moves to unitary control next year. It, could be used on projects such as providing new floodlights at Whitchurch Alport Football Club, and improvements to civic buildings and town security cameras.

Members of North Shropshire District Council’s cabinet will meet to consider approving the proposals on Monday.

The money has come from savings on last year’s budget, but with the council set to be scrapped next year, councillors decided to use the funds before assets are transferred to the new unitary authority.

A working group was set up earlier this year to identify suitable projects.

Some of the applications being considered are: £10,000 to help extend the pavilion at Frankton Cricket Club, £1,000 towards main cabling for Wem’s Christmas lights, £5,400 to buy cardio-vascular equipment for the Maurice Chandler Sports Centre and £15,000 for scanning the remaining historic development control files into the public access system at North Shropshire District Council as well as repairs to Ellesmere’s old town hall and CCTV in Whitchurch.

A report to the committee said: “The council has received a number of requests for funding for a variety of schemes.

“There is £100,000 currently available and it is considered that the most equitable method of allocating these funds is via a working group reporting back to cabinet.”

Earlier this year the cabinet agreed to give £15,000 of savings to install CCTV in Wem, £15,000 to be shared equally between the Better Welcome Projects in Market Drayton, Whitchurch and Wem, £5,000 for a children’s play area in Prees and £9,000 to support activities at the swimming centres in Market Drayton and Whitchurch, among other things.

The cabinet will be meeting at the council offices in Wem on Monday at 4pm.
