Kempson ready to move on
Tuesday 15th July 2008, 11:50AM BST.
Out-of-favour defender Darran Kempson has admitted his Shrewsbury Town days appear numbered as he ponders his future. The former Crewe and Preston stopper, signed in the summer of 2007, has conceded he is likely to have to look elsewhere in his search for regular first-team football.
Kempson was one of four fit players left out of the Town squad currently in Spain for a pre-season training camp and finds himself well down the defensive pecking order.
Shrewsbury’s arch-rivals Wrexham have made clear their interest in the 23-year-old, as revealed in yesterday’s StarSport.
And while Kempson has stopped short of admitting he has made his final appearance in blue-and-amber, he is considering a future elsewhere.
“Paul Simpson has said that if clubs are interested and I want to go, I can as long as it’s right for everyone,” said Kempson. “Wrexham have shown a bit of interest but there’s nothing concrete at the moment – I’m just weighing up my options.
“There are a few League clubs interested as well but it just depends on what is best for my career.
“The manager has brought Michael Jackson and Shane Sherriff in and he has got Kelvin Langmead so, to be honest, I don’t think it’s too realistic (to think of breaking into the team).
“I’ve got another year left at Shrewsbury but I’m not the type to sit on my contract if there’s no chance of regular football.
“I want to start playing and get on with my career.”
Kempson admitted he had hoped to break back into the Town reckoning when he was re-called early from a loan spell at Accrington at the start of April.
“I enjoyed it at Accrington because I was playing games and John Coleman (Stanley manager) was happy with me,” he added.
“When I came back to Shrewsbury I thought I did quite well. The results improved and I played my part in that.
“But I wasn’t too surprised to be miss out on the Spain trip because Paul Simpson had said that if I wanted to go I could and I respect the manager for letting me know. I will talk too him when he gets back and see where we are.”
