Wellington suffer Bhatia blow

Monday 14th July 2008, 11:49AM BST.

Rajat BhatiaWellington Cricket Club will have to cope without an overseas player for the remainder of the season after learning Rajat Bhatia will not be returning from India.

The talented allrounder returned to his homeland at the end of June after being named in the India ‘A’ squad to tour Israel.

Wellington officials were expecting Bhatia to be absent for four weeks, but received a text message from the 28-year-old at the end of last week to confirm he will not be heading back to Shropshire.

“We received a text late Thursday from Rajat to say he wouldn’t be coming back because his tour to Israel has been extended and he has some cricket in India in September,” said spokesman Terry O’Connor.

“We are extremely disappointed and we feel as though he has let us down but there is not a lot we can do.

“We are not happy with the way we were informed – that was pretty unprofessional.

“There is no doubt as a player he would have been a magnificent asset to us but we are not the first club who have been let down by an overseas player and we won’t be the last.”

Birmingham League officials have confirmed the Birmingham League division one strugglers will not be able to recruit another overseas player.

Real shame that Rajat didn’t return to play in Shropshire. He is a very fine player and a very nice guy.

He has really relaunched his career after his spell at Newport, before he came he was in the cricket wilderness a little and then progressed to a reglar spot in the Indian Premier League.

Good luck to him for the future , perhaps we will see him back in the County next season.
